This entry assumes you’ve read Toby’s Backstory.
If you have not already done that, it’s recommended to start there.
It was an exhausting journey to Waterdeep. The road was long but I finally arrived at the destination that Volothe requested I depart for. To what end I do not know but he promised all would be revealed in time.
I guess I should back up though if I’m going to document this unusual journey. After the events with the mayor, I continued to practice with the orb like Volothe explained, but it wasn’t long before he returned. He mentioned having big plans in mind for me but he was light on details. His only direction was to travel to Waterdeep and so travel I did. Mom and Dad weren’t thrilled with the idea but they eventually relented.
The road to Neverwinter was hard. I had never traveled so far from home before and having to make the journey by myself and without so much as a horse was a daunting task. As the towering trees of the Neverwinter Wood receded, I had only my own thoughts to keep me company. Sure, I’d see passing travelers from time to time but otherwise the road was quiet.
I had hoped to complete the journey from Floodblest to Neverwinter in a day but that was foolish of me. With the sun quickly fading I was forced to make camp along the road or risk walking in the dark. That’s a sure way to break an ankle, though. I had trouble falling asleep, expecting at any moment to be attacked by marauders or something, but eventually exhaustion took me.
After packing up I walked the rest of the way to Neverwinter. Nothing could have prepared me for the first sight of the city. It was so huge! I so badly wanted to stay and explore the city but with my supplies dwindling and the limited coin available, there just wasn’t time. I went to see if I could find any caravans that might be leaving for Waterdeep. I only got told off a few times but after a little while I found a small trade caravan and while the guards didn’t seem too keen on me being there, I managed to talk the nice dwarf merchant into letting me join them for the trip.
The journey to Waterdeep was much more relaxing than the one to Neverwinter. Harman, that’s the dwarf, was a chatty fellow and enjoyed telling stories. We got along well and he even fed me which was very kind. He was telling me the men who are guarding the caravan are just some hired hands he found but I can’t help but wonder if there’s more going on there.
After a few days we trundled into Waterdeep and parked the carts in the Trades Ward where Harman said he would be looking to set up a more permanent shop. Before I could leave though he gave me a small golden amulet which he said was enchanted. I couldn’t believe my luck and thanked him profusely. I hope I can one day repay his kindness. Now I just need to find a place called The Yawning Portal, Volothe said I would find what I was looking for there. Cryptic.
Is this insane though? I don’t even know much about Volothe but so far he’s seemed to have been very up front with me. Maybe he even somehow arranged this whole trip with Harman and I didn’t even know it. Obviously he’s powerful if he was able to impart this incredible power onto me. I suspect it’s only a fraction of what he could teach me and I very badly want to go on a grand adventure. Time will tell I guess.
