We spent the next couple of days running errands and purchasing furniture for Lif’s Last Call. The following morning, representatives from the city knocked on our door. Barris Willowhelm and Caldona Glittergleam, a priestess of Waukeen, told us that a reward was due. She said that a total of 522,763 gold was recovered from the Vault of Dragons and that our cut was 52,276 gold and 3 silver. They told us that we were not to discuss the amount with anyone.
After a few more days of errands, Duelo suggested we speak with Renaer Neverember and Lady Rosznar before we left for the Undermountain. We went to see Esvele first, and Duelo asked if he could access the Vault of Dragons again. She told us that the city was now controlling it and that she had no say. We then went to see Renaer, who told us that his family’s reputation was improving but that it was a long process.
We returned to the manor to rest before heading to the Yawning Portal the next morning. Once we reached the bottom of the portal, we were in a hallway with nine false doors with bas reliefs of demons on the walls. Duelo found a switch, and Melandran identified the demons on the walls. We found a skeleton pointing at a button next to a door. Greemus slid it open, and Duelo ducked inside, where we found a pool of water and a statue of a sahuagin with a broken arm that gave off a glowing purple aura. We stepped in the water and were attacked by a gray ooze, but we quickly dispatched it.
We returned to the main hall and found a skeleton of a serpent hanging in the air. We went upstairs and found an armor rack with a longsword stuck in it and a severed serpent hand at the foot of the rack. We didn’t want to touch the sword, as it was magical, so I had my Imp familiar, Nix, pick it up. It wouldn’t drop the sword in our Bag of Holding, so I had Nix enter the bag and dismissed him.
We found two creatures in a room full of dead adventurers and dispatched them, but there was nothing of value. Further down the hall, we found several closed doors and a hole in the wall that looked out into the entrance. The first door led to a small closet with another door at the back that made a noise like glass when we opened it. We quickly closed it and went to the second door. Inside were three large statues, and a voice cried out for help when we approached a broken staff. Melandran mended it, and Duelo, now invisible, opened a door into a common area and found several people disguised as vampires. We quickly ambushed them and discovered they were members of The Undertakers. We found a key in a fresco on a back wall.
We returned to the statue room and explored a secret door that Duelo found. It led to a room with frescos of people being tortured by a giant bat. At the end of the room was a sarcophagus with a hole at the foot. Inside was a small vial of clear liquid that smelled like water. We also found a throne on a dais with a wyvern skeleton surrounded by crystal shards.
We explored some other rooms and found more Undertakers and a large sleeping creature. We secured the sleeping creature’s door and attempted to sneak up on the Undertakers. However, our plan failed, and they attacked us. As one of them died, it reverted to its doppelganger form. We heard a gunshot and the door behind us splintered. A giant abomination and a woman with a firearm entered the room. We managed to kill the abomination, but the woman retreated. We took a moment to collect ourselves and decided to pursue her.
