Like the Aarakocra, long ago there existed a population of bird creatures who lived high in the mountains of what today is called The Airspire. A sudden streak of bright light lit up the skies and a great explosion from a comet created a valley between the mountain peaks. While some were killed in the calamity, many were able to take to the skies to avoid the dangers of the falling rock and debris. However the comet also brought with it a unique celestial energy, no doubt collected as it crossed the cosmos, and the explosion expelled that energy, fusing it into the very environment and any who happened to be in the area.

As the years passed, this dispersed energy began to have an effect on the bird population here, however the birds that would develop into Aarakocra were those that were in closest proximity to the explosion of celestial energy. Those that would become the Kenku were at the furthest edges of where that energy touched. As a result, the Kenku did not develop language skills as advanced as the Aarakocra, but they are no less cunning and intelligent.
