Dragonborn

Earliest existence: 2,000 years ago

Legend has it that a powerful cult dedicated to worshiping dragons and their innate power managed to capture and subdue a dragon named Enathir. They would spend years forcing her to lay clutches of eggs so they could attempt to magically cross breed dragons with Humans in an attempt to seize the power of dragons for themselves.

After a number of years working to find a way to fuse dragon and Human genetic material together in a way that would support life, one of the cult members had a breakthrough. They had finally managed to get an egg to fertilize. However it would be still several more years before they would see if a healthy progeny would be born.

In the meantime, the cult shared their latest success and redoubled their efforts using what they learned. Before long they had an entire room full of incubating dragon eggs. As the years passed, the eggs began to reach maturity and hatch. The cult called these new creatures Dragonborn.

It got to the point where they had so many they began experimenting with speeding up the aging process with the young. At first, many died during the process but eventually the cultists were able perfect their methods and create adult Dragonborn in just a few months, rather than a couple decades.

As the number of Dragonborn grew they became increasingly difficult for the cultists to control. Dragonborn would often escape from their captors despite their best efforts to subdue them. The Dragonborn that were able to escape would often seek each other out, eventually creating a place for themselves away from Human society. It is believed the cult died off in the years following their creation of the Dragonborn. Much like the Tieflings on the other side of the world, the Dragonborn find the other races are slow to accept them.
