Earliest existence: 9,000 years ago
The Dwarves, largely preferring to live closer to the surface so they could still grow crops with what little sunlight they could bring underground, seemed uninterested in exploring the deepest, darkest depths. However a portion of their society broke away after discovering a vast network of caves and tunnels running far below anything their people had ever found before. This cave system would lead them into what would come to be known as the Everdark. Here the Dwarves would become cut off from the rest of the world for many millennia and in that time their bodies would adapt to their new environment.
It wasn’t until more recently that the occasional Duergar would be seen on the surface and as such they are seen by the other races as mysterious and curious. However since so little is known about them and their society outside the depths, most surface dwellers will be unaware of them.
