Thousands of years ago, the sky above Kemet was torn open by an impossible, terrible light. It was the death of a star too close for comfort, and for weeks, the sheer white spectacle consumed everything. Day and night collapsed into one blinding, relentless event. All across the world, people who had been quietly, desperately tinkering with the smallest trickles of energy from magical wells suddenly felt a catastrophic shift.
The power that had always been locked away, tied to a physical place—a damp cave or a hidden shrine—now surged free. It was a jolt that ran straight through every person who had ever dared to reach for it. That bond to the physical well of astral essence was violently snapped, but instead of losing the power, they found it was now simply theirs. It was inside them, a pounding, limitless heart. They no longer had to sneak away to practice or argue over who got to use the meager source. The world had just handed them everything. This incredible, fearful flood of energy allowed them to finally push past the old research and unlock new, dangerous ways to use their abilities, ushering in a brilliant and terrifying age of mighty mages.

While the inhabitants of Kemet didn’t fully understand what happened at the time, this supernova event unleashed a powerful wave of astral energy out into the cosmos. It was close enough to the planet to interact with the latent cosmic essence within Kemet and caused a planet wide surge which expelled vast stores of raw magical energy from deep within the core all the way to the surface and into the atmosphere. This event would reshape the world so completely that the peoples of Kemet decide to use the event as the beginning of a new age. The calendar reflects this change as Year 0 and dates are indicated with a Before Rupture (BR) and After Rupture (AR) naming convention.
